The Dam at the southern end of the Lake Allende is holding back waters that fill the lake 96.7 percent of its capacity.
The floodgates have been opened to keep the water level at the maximum allowed so that not too much water will be released to the detriment of downriver Celaya and Comonfort.

Guanajuato to invest heavily in tourism

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Over the course of the next three years, the government of Guanajuato will invest 1.6 billion pesos in tourism development schemes, that the central state´s tourism secretary announced Aug. 29.

“Today, tourism is a major source of revenue for our state,” said Sergio Rodríguez Herrera, during a press conference at the Camino Real Hotel.

“But by the year 2012, our goal is for it to be the second-largest source of revenues for Guanajuato.”

Currently, tourism ranks fifth in the state´s economic activity, behind industry, agriculture, mining and commerce.

The largest share of the government´s investment, roughly 300 million pesos, will go toward building highways and other infrastructure facilities to encourage cultural tourism to the state´s lesser developed south and north, Rodríguez Herrera said.

“The central areas of the state receive about 95 percent of our tourists,” he said, “but there are areas in the south and north that can be developed for tourism.”

In the northern, less accessible regions of the state, Rodríguez Herrera said adventure and ecological tourism destinations will be encouraged.

To the south, the government hopes to promote seven former mining towns and the Laguna de Yuriria, which is three times the size of the lake in Valle de Bravo, as high-end destinations.

“We have to focus on quality tourism if we are going to compete in the global market,” Rodríguez Herrera said.

The Guanajuato official also said that his government will invest in a network of tourist highway support stopovers that will provide information, roadside assistance, clean restrooms and emergency medical attention to tourists.

“About 80 percent of our state´s tourists arrive via highway, either in buses or private cars,” he said.

“We really want to make their travel comfortable.”
