General News

THIS did not happen in SMA, but in Morelia, the state capital of neighboring state of Michoacán! On the night of September 15, as the Michoacán’s governor was leading patriotic onlookers in the Grito, and along with bells ringing nearby, two grenades were thrown into the crowd, killing 8 and injuring 132. It is assumed that drug cartel members are the guilty ones. Presidente Calderon launched his anti-crime crusade from his home town of Morelia, and visited the city on the 17th after the horrors of the 15th.

---------------------------------------------------------------

In SMA, Mayor Jesús Correa reported on his accomplishments during the second year of his mayoralty. He reported that progress has been made in ecology, economy, education and public security. The Ecology Department has created a Green Fund with 3 million pesos of collected fees to work with governments of other municipalities and various universities, and has installed water harvesting in 10 rural communities. In economy, it has been reported by IMSS that during the year 1,600 jobs were created. An economic study with UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), “Gran Visión” analyzed SMA’s socio-economic status aiming to support possible investors’ concerns on economic security. He was most proud of the progress in education with the start up this past year in SMA’s Biblioteca Pública in conjunction with UNAM’s Faculty of Economics of a center for continuing education. It will use online or onsite for presentation of new required subjects (computer use). The new Technical University of North Guanajuato opened in El Pípila high school to offer degrees that will complement the tourist economy of SMA. It will have a building, already begun, and built in cooperation with the State. A college, International College for Experience Learning, will offer degrees in 34 subjects, again directed toward the local tourist economy. Under the topic of public security, the Police Department has acquired 10 new motorcycles, 8 machine guns, (remember the day when visiting narcos tried to bribe our Police Chief a couple of months ago?), four pick-up tucks and one mobile police sub-station. There is continuing work to improve the traffic flow. Of the city’s nearly 90 buses, almost 20 have been replaced by minibuses. Under beautification, the Oratorio, the Atotonilco Shrine, the cemetery of San Juan de Dios have all had improvement work done. New lighting has been installed on the clock tower and the churches of Santa Escuela, Santa Ana and San Juan de Dios. A third stage of bury cables in el Centro is being completed.

General News

During the City Council meeting on September 5, there was a vote to reconsider having the bulls run in the downtown streets once again. Last year’s canceled Sanmiguelada had been a poor copy of the ages-old traditional St. Firman’s Day event in Pamplona, Spain – the Pamplonada.

José Luna of Mama Mia, lost much business with the cancellation, as did many other bars and small eateries. Luna thinks the Sanmiguelada was a badly organized event and suggests one which is better planned, located away from the very center of town. It could support Patronato Pro-Juventud Sanmiguelense for low income youth. It is doubtful if the Sanmiguelada will be reinstated this year, but certainly, a rousing event to bring visitors to town is needed in the autumn months – a week of top notch bull fights maybe.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Spain will probably return to Mexico the two flags that were used in the early days of Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain. The flags were lost in a battle on January 17, 1811. The possible return date is during the 200th year independence celebration in 2010.

The Instituto de Rehabilitación y Enseñanza Especial (IREE) is the only school for deaf children, where they can receive basic education, sign-language instruction and speech therapy. It is supported by donations to cover costs while the families of most of the students cannot afford the minimal tuition. It was thought that it could not reopen this school year, but thanks to the temporary rescue came the Bernard Weisman Foundation with a US$12,500 grant, it can continue through the end of this year. Three teachers, a speech/language therapist and a school director also provide to basic education. The school is a place where the deaf children can communicate with others, not only those with similar problems, but to develop social skills. Students come from SMA, Celaya, Comonfort, Dolores Hidalgo and Querétaro. To help by sponsoring a student, or paying the teachers’ salaries (US$3,000 a month), or adopting the school rent (US$600 a month) or paying the monthly utilities (US$125), contact the director/founder Cecelia Escobar at 152-0913 or iree@uisono.net.mx. Holly Yasui is fundraising coordinator. Contact her at 152-8166 pr hollyyasui@yahoo.com

The Juárez Park has a cast bronze sculpture of two heads entwined called The Lovers. The piece has a history – made by a female artist known as Rai Graner Murray. In the 1930s she worked with Enrique Alfarez in both Morelia and New Orleans and visited SMA from time to time. Now Rai Graner’s daughter Lynne Gleason lives in SMA and specializes in sculpting horses. She has donated her mother’s work to the growing sculpture garden in Juárez Park.

General News

August 30
– Sanmiguelenses joined citizens of many cities in Mexico and the Capital in peaceful demonstrations (the demonstrators wore white) against the violence and unsettled state of affairs that result from the drug trade, which begets police corruption, kidnapping, murders and social disruptions. In Mexico City, the demonstration focused on the recent kidnapping and murder of a boy of 14. In San Miguel de Allende, the focus was on the death of a man (Adrián Valdéz) who was unjustly arrested in June, handcuffed then stepped on by a police officer. His family paid for his release by the authorities. Because he was then in a bad condition, he was taken to the General Hospital, and was later taken to a hospital in León, where he died from apparent cerebral trauma. The SMA police claim the man leaped from a car on the way to the jail and hit his head. Other complaints about the police force are numerous.

Happier news is that during the past two months, the green areas of the city plus the medians of both the Exits to Celaya and Querétaro are being replanted with plants that need only basic maintenance and little water. The red stone (tezontle) that has been used in the medians is being is being replaced with mulch and gravel in a water-saving effort.

The on-line SMAmap has joined the Juarde and Conexiones to help keep folks oriented in the city and some areas outside of town. SMAmap was started by Andy Baltimore and Rick Wendling, computer gurus from way back.
