The Weekender – September 20, 2008

General News

THIS did not happen in SMA, but in Morelia, the state capital of neighboring state of Michoacán! On the night of September 15, as the Michoacán’s governor was leading patriotic onlookers in the Grito, and along with bells ringing nearby, two grenades were thrown into the crowd, killing 8 and injuring 132. It is assumed that drug cartel members are the guilty ones. Presidente Calderon launched his anti-crime crusade from his home town of Morelia, and visited the city on the 17th after the horrors of the 15th.

In SMA, Mayor Jesús Correa reported on his accomplishments during the second year of his mayoralty. He reported that progress has been made in ecology, economy, education and public security. The Ecology Department has created a Green Fund with 3 million pesos of collected fees to work with governments of other municipalities and various universities, and has installed water harvesting in 10 rural communities. In economy, it has been reported by IMSS that during the year 1,600 jobs were created. An economic study with UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), “Gran Visión” analyzed SMA’s socio-economic status aiming to support possible investors’ concerns on economic security. He was most proud of the progress in education with the start up this past year in SMA’s Biblioteca Pública in conjunction with UNAM’s Faculty of Economics of a center for continuing education. It will use online or onsite for presentation of new required subjects (computer use). The new Technical University of North Guanajuato opened in El Pípila high school to offer degrees that will complement the tourist economy of SMA. It will have a building, already begun, and built in cooperation with the State. A college, International College for Experience Learning, will offer degrees in 34 subjects, again directed toward the local tourist economy. Under the topic of public security, the Police Department has acquired 10 new motorcycles, 8 machine guns, (remember the day when visiting narcos tried to bribe our Police Chief a couple of months ago?), four pick-up tucks and one mobile police sub-station. There is continuing work to improve the traffic flow. Of the city’s nearly 90 buses, almost 20 have been replaced by minibuses. Under beautification, the Oratorio, the Atotonilco Shrine, the cemetery of San Juan de Dios have all had improvement work done. New lighting has been installed on the clock tower and the churches of Santa Escuela, Santa Ana and San Juan de Dios. A third stage of bury cables in el Centro is being completed.
