General News

October 17 – 26
- The annual Book Fair is in the Jardín and commemorates various 50-year events, such as the anniversary of Carlos Fuentes publishing of his novel Where the Air is Clear (La region más transparente) with a lecture, writing workshops and a master class by Gonzalo Celorio and the celebration of the Biblioteca’s founding. The sale of books in the Jardín is from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 daily.

The current president of the Department of Family Integration, who is always the mayor’s wife, gave an annual report of the organization’s achievements on October 22. Patricia Gutiérrez Rebollo reported that DIF had been able to construct 330 houses (more than three times the amount as were built in 2007) in the program My DIFferent House (Mi Casa DIFerente) for families in SMA who live in extreme poverty. DIF is a department of SMA’s governmental structure. The city is taking ideas from various volunteer organizations and thus expanding the good that comes of good ideas that work. A food program supplements that which is needed by pregnant and nursing women, children, the handicapped and the elderly. There is also a program of Students’ Breakfasts for children between ages 3 and 12 in 178 urban and rural schools. The program aims to provide 30 percent of the kids’ daily nutritional needs. During the past year 9,000 children benefited. There is Casa Esperanza for young people with major troubles, where 147 were helped. Legal help, domestic violence counseling helped nearly 2,000 Sanmiguelenses.

Many homes will have altars to be seen in the windows, and some fountains will have altars made by neighbors.

An Arthur Murray former studio manager, Christie Olvera, will open a dance studio on October 28 in El Sindicato, Recreo 4. In addition to classes in traditional ballroom and rhythm dances, there will be weekly parties. Groups and Meetings

October 26
- The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear Charlie Hall, a SMA resident, who was born without forearms or hands; talk about his learning to live, feel comfortable and be productive. The Fellowship, which welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity, meets each Sunday in La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.

October 26
- Danzón is back in the Jardín on upcoming Sundays, with The Orquesta Marimba “Tomo 13.” Members of the Club de Danzón Mercerina will be leading the dancers in the Jardín in two different sessions each Sunday, from 1:00 to 3:00 and again from 7:00 to 9:00. Between sessions dancers can become shoppers at the annual Book Fair.

October 28
– The Midday Rotary Club at its weekly meeting in the Hotel Real de Minas will hear Michael Sudheer tell about his crazy experiences as tour director for Globus. – Mujeres en Cambio will not have luncheon but afternoon tea from 4:00 to 6:00 in a different location – the Instituto Allende, Ancha de San Antonio 20. Jaime Fernández will talk about Day of the Dead traditions and the altar which his family has created year after year at the Instituto. Tours

October 25
– Saturday Adventure Tours usually visit a home of an artist and then goes to a place of interest out of town. The tour leaves from in front of the Parroquia at 10:30.

October 26
- House and Garden Tour begins gathering at the Biblioteca Pública at 11:00 a.m. and leaves at noon to visit 2 houses.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.

October 28
– The Tuesday morning tour of the botanic garden El Charco del Ingenio meets at the main entrance and leaves promptly at 10:00 a.m. It lasts about two and a half hours. Bring hat and water and wear comfortable walking shoes. For further information, call 154-8838.

November 18
– The Lions Club of SMA is sponsoring a three-day trip that goes to Cuernavaca, Xochicalco and on to Taxco. There will be an optional side trip to the caves of Cacahumilpa. The trip will raise

Performing Arts

October 24
- Javier “Gitano” Estrada will give a concert of Gypsy guitar and voice in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal at 7:00. Entrance is at Reloj 50A.

October 25
– Oriental dancers will bring their American tribal style belly dance to El Sindicato, Recreo 4, at 8:00. They come from all over Mexico. Classes will be given as well. To contact for classes, call 044 (415) 109-4982 or check at El Sindicato.

– Pro Música will have the brass quintet M5: Metales from Morelia in a joyous concert “Esta Cañón” in St. Paul’s Church, Calle Cardo at 5:00.

October 27
– Auditions for “Mame” (Performances February 9 thru 15) in the Santa Ana Theater from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00. Needed: actors and singers from ages 20’s to 70’s, a boy, aged 10 to 12, who can act and sing, also a man who can do an accent as houseboy. Rehearsals begin in December. – For about a year, they, the Kantaré Chorus, have been learning to sing under the tutelage of Xavier Hernandéz. This week about 30 young people will begin performing. They will perform on the 29th at St. Paul’s Church, Calle Cardo 6 at 6:30 and on the 30th in the Santa Ana Theater at 6:30. Entrance is at Insurgentes 25. Director Hernandéz and accompanist, Lilliana Gútierrez, will be the same for both performances.

Exhibitions and Openings

– An exhibition of War Is So Out, a combination drawings, installations, photographs and performance with anti-war focus by artists Daniel Cameron, Kirsten Dehner and Barbara Levine and Karen Karabasz. Studio D is at Colegio Militar 14A in Colonia Guadalupe.

October 25
– The Yam Gallery, interior 1 in Instituto Allende, Ancha de San Antonio 20, will have an opening from 7:00 to 9:00 for much of Eddie Soloway’s photographic work, prepared for his book One Thousand Moons. Soloway comes to SMA for the second time as part of Santa Fe Workshops photography sessions each year.

October 25
– Mero Arte Contempráneo, Zacateros 24, will hold an opening for “Roots” by Shannon Reece. The opening is from 5:00 to 7:00.

General News

October 17 through 19
– A Concourse of Motor Sports will benefit CASA and Casita Linda. Those coming to SMA are part of the 100 vintage racing cars with their drivers and co-drivers. On the 17th, there will be a poker rally. To participate, registration is at 10:00 a.m. and a social hour at 6:00, both at Hotel Refugio del Molino. On the 18th a display of vehicles from all over Mexico in the parking lot on Calle Cardo from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00. On October 18, the Hotel Refugio del Molina will host a Gala, complete with Margaritas, a gourmet dinner prepared by chefs Kirsten West and Fernando Padilla, along with a chance to meet Hershel Cardiff, the winner of the first Pan-American Race in 1950 and the 2008 racing teams from Canada and the USA. Tickets are available at gala@concurso@gmail.com. On the 19th Panam race cars and winners will be on display in the Jardín from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00. For this last event, entrance is FREE.

– The Park and Playground La Lejona Dos in the Colonia La Lejona Dos will have a kermesse organized by the Neighborhood Watch (Vecinos Vigilantes). They hope to raise funds to complete the improvements on the park – the path for jogging/walking made of bricks, a playground kiosk and a basketball court. They have made improvements on the park and playground – receptacles for recycling plastic bottles, glass and cans, special clean-up days and distributing traffic and road safety alerts for residents of the area. This year, there are more choices in higher education for SMA young people. The University of León has a branch here located in the Plaza Civica; The Centro de Estudios Superiores de Allende is in the Colonia Aurora; The Universidad Continente Americano is on Calzada La Aurora and Instituto Technológico is on Calle Mesones; new in SMA is a branch of the Universidad Technológica del Norte de Guanajuato, a branch of that school in Dolores Hidalgo, now located on the road to Doctor Mora behind the fair grounds in new buildings.

La Universidad de León offers degrees in Accounting, Administrative computer science, Architecture, Business administration, Communications, Law and Organizational psychology. The Centro de Estudios Superiores de Allende has degrees in Accounting, Business administration and Law. The Universidad Continente Americano offers degrees in Administration and Computer Science, while the Instituto Technológico has degrees in Mechanical engineering. The Universidad Technológico del Norte de Guanajuato is offering a “superior technician” degree in Gastronomy and Tourism. It is planned that soon the SMA school will not continue to be just a branch, but a stand-alone (autonomous) university.

From October 3 to 11, the Kids First team of 23 medical professionals was here for the fourth visit, and performed 80 free surgeries on children who had orthopedic problems and congenital aberrations. The visiting team members were supported by various branches of SMA government, the General Hospital, the Centro de Crecimiento and community volunteers. On October 5, the four visiting doctors examined approximately 150 children under 18 as candidates for surgery, most of whom had been suggested by SMA’s Family Integration Department (DIF) and others came from Irapuato. On October 6, three operating rooms of the General Hospital went into active service starting at 7:00, using the medical equipment imported by the Kids First team from their headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee. On an average, 16 surgeries a day were performed from the 6th through the 10th.

Insurgentes Park in the Fraccionamiento Insurgentes is getting a face lift with the building of sidewalks, and other paths, the installation of electricity and improved greenery. The cost will be about 14 hundred thousand pesos.

If transportation can be volunteered, Great! Water, hat and comfortable shoes are musts. Bird books and binoculars add to the enjoyment.

Jim Hawkins was a sculptor, artist, jazz musician in New York in the 40’s and 50’s. He came to SMA 54 years ago. Hawkins had not sculpted for 40 years when he made the bronze portrait of his wife Carmen Masip, which stands outside Bellas Artes on Calle Hernández Macías. Jim and Carmen opened the first bookstore/art supplier/framer in town, El Colibri, and the Academía Hispano Americana and then with others started the Festival de Música (now in its 30th year). He died on September 2 at age 81. He and Carmen helped create integral parts of SMA, and so we will remember them both.

There have been more than 15 incidents of tires punched, graffiti on houses, robberies and house invasions in Colonia San Antonio. These lead to a meeting of a group of residents there (mostly foreigners) with Police Chief Daniel Trujillo. Trujillo explained that there are only 35 officers on duty each shift to patrol 83 registered neighborhoods and more than 500 rural communities. Both Trujillo and the officer in charge of the San Antonio area gave out their private cell phone numbers. He asked that in addition to reporting all crime, the residents begin teaching English to the policemen.

– A Concourse of Motor Sports will benefit CASA and Casita Linda. Those coming to SMA are part of the 100 vintage racing cars with their drivers and co-drivers. On the 17th, there will be a poker rally. To participate, registration is at 10:00 a.m. and a social hour at 6:00, both at Hotel Refugio del Molino. On the 18th a display of vehicles from all over Mexico in the parking lot on Calle Cardo from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00. On October 18, the Hotel Refugio del Molina will host a Gala, complete with Margaritas, a gourmet dinner prepared by international chefs, along with a chance to meet Hershel Cardiff, the winner of the first Panamerican Race in 1950 and the 2008 racing teams from Canada and the USA. – The Park and Playground La Lejona Dos in the Colonia La Lejona Dos will have a kermesse organized by the Neighborhood Watch (Vecinos Vigilantes). They hope to raise funds to complete the improvements on the park – the path for jogging/walking made of bricks, a playground kiosk and a basketball court. They have made improvements on the park and playground – receptacles for recycling plastic bottles, glass and cans, special clean-up days and distributing traffic and road safety alerts for residents of the area. – There will be no House and Garden Tour this week as the downtown streets will be closed for the passage of the image of San Miguel is carried through the city.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.

Performing Arts

October 11
– Coming to SMA, as part of this year’s International Cervantino Festival, Windspiel are two young German Frauleins, in a musical duet of accordion and flute. Their specialty is combining the classical accordion with various recorders and electroacoustic sounds. They will play new music, works written especially for them. The concert is in the Santa Ana Theater at 7:00. Entrance is at Reloj 50A.

Actors needed for an original play “The Death of Reason (A Tragedy in Rhyme)” to be performed January 14 through 18. Rehearsals are Decemer 1 through 19 and December 28 through January 13. Playwright Stephanie Glick is bringing some of the cast fro New York, but needs some men, ages 40 to 80 and some women, ages 60 to 80. Casting is by Taylor Korobow. He can be reached at 152-0918.

Also coming up on April 6 through 11 is the three-act “The Man Who Failed to Fly (a love story).” Needed are 4 men, 4 women, 2 children, 6 Latin dancers and a theater-skilled choreographer, plus technical workers for art, props and special effects. Children who can’t see, or have impaired vision now have a place to enlarge their lives. Lisa Vickers has started a school for these unfortunate kids. Her son, John was born sighted, but a brain tumor brought on blindness. With the purchase of canes, Braille books and Braille instruction programs, plus stimulating toys, she has started a school. She has received help from the Hilton/Perkins Program. Conrad Hilton Foundation and Perkins International especially seek to improve the life of children with multiple disabilities around the world. A change of responsibility in City Hall took place when the City Secretary turned the control of the jail over to Daniel Trujillo, head of Public Security. The cells have had graffiti erased and have been repainted. Surveillance cameras and a two-way mirror view room have been added. No police officer can now enter with a gun, but must place them in locker when they enter. Digital photos of persons arrested with the personal information entered into a computerized database are now part of routine.

– Amigos de la Presa will meet for one of their regular kayak outings on Presa Allende. A kayak manufacturer, Mayan Kayaks, from Querétaro, will be on hand with its full line of kayaks and provide a chance to try kayaks FREE of charge. Directions: From the parking area at the train station (at the far end of Canal), toward the left, cross the train tracks and continue straight on the cobblestone paving (not the non-paved road on the right). About 2 miles straight ahead to the fork in the road, to where the cobblestones become a dirt road. Follow the chain-link fence about 100 yards, and there is where the kayaking will be set up. – The Poet’s Society is a group of two – Andrés Súarez, playing guitar and harmonica, adding his voice and Xavier Olazábal on drums. They will play blues, boss nova with some folk in the Santa Ana Theater at 7:00. The entrance is at Reloj 50A.

- El Viejo Topo Café-Teatro, Calle Stirling Dickinson 28, will feature the Puerto Rican saxophonist Ivan Renta and his Quartet, appearing for one night only. The jazz starts at 9:00.

Exhibitions and Openings

October 3
– Generator Gallery at Fábrica La Aurora celebrates the poet, political activist and teacher Dolores Jiménez y Muro, who died October 15, 1925. Seven women artists in various media using their personal creativity to celebrate her life will show their works. The artists are Laura Begoña, Angélica Castañeda, Margarette Dawit, Cati Demme, Gerry Gil, Sioban O’Donoghue and Susan Plum. The opening begins at 5:00.

October 3
– Grace Relfe, who has dipped into the art scene of SMA shows her work in St. Paul’s Parish Hall, Calle Cardo 6. The opening for “Tropical Flair” is from 5:00 to 7:00.

October 11
– Kunsthaus Santa Fe, in the Colonia Allende at Santa Fe 22A, will participate in the Cervantino International Festival by showing works by painter/sculptor Marco Arce. The opening of “The Rabbit and the Angry Face” will be at 7:00.
