Breast cancer in Guanajuato women is on the rise, and the causes may be numerous. The Municipal Institute of Allende for helping women (IMAM) is promoting the idea of a mammogram for every woman. In January of this year, Peruvian singer Tania Libertad gave a fund-raising concert, which cleared enough to pay for 100 mammograms. In that group of women (92), two were in the initial stages of cancer and another in an advanced stage. Of the 80 women who wanted testing but couldn’t because there was no money to pay for them. Until recently, there have been two mammogram machines in SMA.

---------------------------------------------------------------

On October 18, about 500 people gathered in the Jardín for an exercise program. The money collected then was more than $16,000 pesos and the Presidencia donated $15,000 pesos to the program. The General Hospital has just added a digital mammogram machine. It is hoped that an agreement for getting this machine to be used for the Mammograms For Every Woman program, about 300 more women can benefit. This is a drop in the bucket when you consider that women over 40 should have a mammogram every two years, those over 50, annually.
