General News

The president of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) came to SMA to sign an agreement with Mayor Jesús Correa to open a multidisciplinary research center in SMA’s Landeta Park. There will research work carried on in administration, ecology, economics, medicine, philosophy, politics and psychology. Governor Juan Manuel Oliva and active members of the UNAM faculty attended as well.

February 11
- There will be the first of a series of dinner events to support the programs and scholarships of the Waldorf School.
Sponsored by Roger and Rosana Jones and Casa Angelitos at Faroles 3, Col. Atascadero at 5:30, this dinner will feature organic foods to the tunes of live music. Tickets are at 154-7448, 152-0806 or loscharcos@waldorfsanmiguel.org.

Groups and Meetings

February 1
- Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear the text of Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s incendiary speech of last March read by Sandy Brooks, Dr. Clifford DuRand, Marianne Koerner and Jon Siever to remind us that President Obama’s promises are on track. The Fellowship welcomes all races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity, when it meets each Sunday in La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.

February 3
- The Social and Newcomers Club meets every Tuesday evening at either a local restaurant or one of the members’ private home. Newcomers who are bridge players meet on Fridays at noon in Casa Payo restaurant, Zacateros 26. The bridge players raise money for kids’ projects. February 3
- The Midday Rotary Club has its weekly meeting in the Hotel Real de Minas. Lunch is at noon and the meeting starts promptly at 12:30. They will hear LifePath bilingual psychotherapist talk about “Stress Management in Stressful Times.” The club will sponsor a Superbowl Party at Longhorn Smokehouse, Salida a Celaya 6, on February 1 at 4:30. Space limits the attendees to 125. There will be door prizes, cash bar to accompany the two hot dogs or one hamburger that comes with the ticket. Tickets are available at the Longhorn Smokehouse or Salect Real Estate, Jesús 5.

Hospice San Miguel sponsors bereavement groups in both English and Spanish. Pat Tirkot (152-8164) counsels in English on Mondays at 4:00 and Leticia Gonzales (415) 113-9806 helps in Spanish. Casa de Sierra Nevada will host first Card and Games Party in the main hotel on February 22 to benefit Hospice San Miguel. Lunch will be served if participants order it. Various prizes will be awarded. Tickets are available at Border Crossings’ headquarters and Fábrica La Aurora, La Conexión, Solutions and La Victoriana.

February 15
- SMA’s Audubon and the botanical garden El Charco del Ingenio are joining together on a fund raising auction of one-of-a-kind bird houses (casitas de aves) created by some of SMA’s artists. The occasion will be from noon to 3:00 and will have snacks and drinks during the entire time. Call Linda Whyman at 152-2139 for tickets.

Lectures

Lectures in the Biblioteca Pública’s, Insurgentes 25, Sala Quetzal (SQ) and Santa Ana Theater (SAT)

January 30 – SQ – Certified facilitator Alejandro Negrete continues his eight-week course in Teachings from Spirit with the fourth class “You Will Know the Truth when You Approach the Truth” at noon.

February 2 – SQ – Lauren Lesko will address the Astrology Forum on this year’s passage through Aquarius at 3:00.

February 3 -SQ – Arturo Morales will talk about the origin of (Candelmas) Candelaria and the local traditions at 1:30.

February 4 – SQ – Global Justice Panel discussion: Globalization and the Economic Crisis will be headed by Betsy Bowman and Cliff DuRand at 10:30 a.m.

February 5 – SQ – An introduction to a 10-week program on Mussar practice entitled “The Path of Mussar” at 3:30. Mussar is many centuries old and is part of Jewish tradition.

February 6 – SQ – Certified facilitator Alejandro Negrete continues his eight-week course in Teachings from Spirit with the fifth class “Heart of Light” at noon.

January 30
- Moonrise Health, at Organos 29, will have a lecture on “Introduction to Magnet Therapy” at 3:00.

February 3
- This year’s PEN lecture series will have Austin Briggs talking about “The Joys of Joyce.” The lecture is in Bellas Artes, Hernández Macías 75 at 6:00.

February 6
- Wayne and Susan Colony will present a lecture with photographs in the Botanical Garden’s Boveda about the small birds that visit El Charco del Ingenio and then take viewers on a short walk looking for the birds. The program begins at 10:00 a.m.

Tours

January 31
- Instituto Allende’s field trip goes to the weaving village of Bernal and then on to Queretaro. Bilingual guides lead all Instituto tours. Reservations are required and fees must be paid in advance at Instituto Allende, Ancha de San Antonio 20. Telephone 152-0226.

January 31
- Saturday Adventure Tours usually visit a home of an artist or artisan and then go to a place of interest out of town.
The tour leaves from the Jardín at 10:30 a.m.

February 1
- House and Garden Tour begins gathering at the Biblioteca Pública at 11:00 a.m. and leaves at noon to visit 3 houses.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.

February 3 and 5
- The Tuesday and Thursday tours of the botanic garden El Charco del Ingenio continue. To join the tour, meet at the main entrance to leave promptly at 10:00 a.m. The tour lasts about two and a half hours. Bring hat and water and wear comfortable walking shoes. February 4
- San Miguel’s Lions Club will take leather shoppers on a day trip to León where they can buy boots and shoes, purses and bags, jackets etc. The first class bus leaves from in front of St. Paul’s Church at 9:00. This trip supports the Lions glasses and diabetes clinic, open on Thursday at Correo 63. For further information, call 152-5541.

February 7
- The Center for Global Justice will take visitors to the women’s sewing cooperative at Hacienda la Trinidad en El Moral, leaving at 9:15 a.m. The trip includes lunch of mole con pollo. To go, call their office at 150-0025.

- Junta Flamenca – Anis and Yerbabuena will give two concerts of flamenco dance and music in The Santa Ana Theater at 5:00.

February 1
- There will be a benefit concert given by the Santa Julia Chorus, some of the 40 girls living at the Santa Julia casa hogar, to benefit their English teacher, who is facing $700,000 peso medical debt. They will be accompanied by Elsmarie Norby, and there will be guest artists and refreshments at Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio at 3:00.

February 1
- Tenor Xavier Hernández and pianist Lilliana Gutiérrez will repeat their “Latin Soul” concert because a full house caused many to be turned away. The concert will be in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A at 2:30.

February 2
- Javier Estrada will give a concert to benefit CEREKA Rehabilitation Center in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A, at 7:30.

February 2 and 5
- Sergio Basurto will give two concerts on the folklore harp and flamenco guitar in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal at 7:30. Entrance is at Reloj 50A.

February 3 thru 5
- San Miguel Playreaders will present Norm Foster’s “Maggie’s Getting Married” at St. Paul’s, Calle Cardo 6.
Henry Vermillion, Britt Zaist are Mom and Dad, Shannon Reese debuts as Maggie. Others in the cast are BJ Abrahamson, Wade Ashley and Joanna Bryne. Eli Nadel provides sound and lights and Marthe Fraser directs. Doors open at 7:00 and the play begins when the house fills or 7:30.

February 4 thru 7
- The Literary Cabaret will bring music’s wonderful world in “Three-Part Harmony” in the Café Monet, Zacateros 83 at 8:00.

February 7 and 8
- Pro Musica has two different concerts by the Carlos Chavez String Quartet in St. Paul’s Church, Calle Cardo 6, at 5:00. Premiered will be a new Quintet for Guitar and Strings by Mexican composer Samuel Zyman, a Juilliard faculty member. The new work was commissioned by Pro Musica.

February 7
- Curro Fernández brings his flamenco group in Suspiros de España to the Angela Peralta Theater, Mesones and Hernández Macías at 8:00.

February 9 thru 15
- Mame, an adaptation for the small stage from the Broadway original will play in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A.
Judy Marzulli will star as Mame with 11-year-old New Yorker Max Lazen. There will be a special opening night celebration. All performances are at 8:00 except the last, which begins at 5:00.

February 13 and 14
- “Los Logros” (Ron Shawn, Liz Stone and Ken Vaun) y Compañeros (Lamine Thiam and African Drums) plus pianist Alejandro Mora Fonseca will present an evening of music and dance (really two evenings) in the Angela Peralta Theater, corner of Mesones and Hernández Macías at 7:00 to benefit ALMA.

Exhibitions and Openings

Continuing exhibit – Galería Atenea, Jesús 2, has four women artists showing their works: Shirley Binin, Kate Church, Ingalora Dwyer and Agnes Olive.

February 3
- Don Knoles’ Cityscapes and Still Lives will open in the Marquisa Gallery of Instituto Allende, Ancha de San Antonio 20, at 5:00. The show runs until February 19.

February 3
- A RED event, at 6:30. There will be a dance and art opening with Marcela Andre’s multimedia works “Conceive Peace” at Tenorio Café, San Francisco 14. She wants attendees to wear something red.

February 5
- El Market Bistro, Hernández Macías 95 will have an opening for the paintings of María Ayala at 7:00.

February 7
- David Leonardo will show his latest work “Poems in Color” at the Generator Gallery, Fábrica la Aurora, with the opening at 6:00.

February 7
- Kunsthaus Santa Fe, Santa Fe 22A, Col. Allende, will show “Deviant Detours” starring new works by 15 artists from the Red Head Gallery in Ontario, Canada. Their collective works reflect on borders involving environment, language and social relationships. The opening is at 7:00.
