General News

Musical chairs are being played with the mayor’s office. As of February 24, San Miguel has a new Mayor. The day before, then-mayor Jesús Correa asked that he be relieved of his office so that he may pursue running for a seat in the national Chamber of Deputies. A similar game was played when then-mayor Villarreal left to run for a higher office. Now, Rodolfo Maycotte, local business man and former assistant mayor, is to replace Correa. If Correa does not succeed in his run for national office, he will return to his post as mayor of SMA.

March 8
- SMA’s Municipal Women’s Institute will celebrate International Women’s Day with free events in the Plaza Civica from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00. There will be free vaccinations and HIV tests. In addition, there will be a lecture on dignity and diversity and a play, as well as exhibits and workshops.

March 7 & 8
- A Kermesse at the Bernard Weisman Foundation headquarters, Quebrada 67, will be an Alternative Fair of Women Artisans with games, a lottery with big and little prizes. The occasion is an effort to re-institute some of the lost-by-the-wayside delightful Mexican traditions. The Fair is from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 both days.

March 17 and 18
- The Volunteer Fair and Conference of the San Miguel Project will have its second event, together with the University of Texas’ Pan American branch and SMA’s Biblioteca Pública, to be held in the main patio of the Library. The aim of the conference is to promote knowledge of the nonprofit organizations operating in SMA.

Business News

Earthworms are a business for a group of families who live at Rancho Gaia, where Productos Organicos Don Juan has its headquarters. Earthworms consume organic waste and manure. The business was started with a government grant and last year cleared $180,000 pesos. To purchase earthworms or their product (fertilizer) call 152-8378.

Groups and Meetings

Hospice reports that their recent exhibition and auction of heart-related art netted over $45,000 pesos.

El Charco and Audubon reported the gain through their Bird House Auction and donations US$20,000.

March 1
- Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear the Reverend Doctor Constance Brereton tell about her recent experiences while visiting the military controlled area that separates India and Pakistan and where before the separation, there existed the princely states of Jammu and Kashmir. The Fellowship welcomes all races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity, when it meets each Sunday in La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.

March 3
- The Midday Rotary Club has its weekly meeting in the Hotel Real de Minas. Check-in hour is from noon to 12:15, and the meeting starts promptly at 12:30. They will hear guest speaker Dianna Aston tell about the Oz project.

- A group of hands-on healers will have their sixth meeting of a series at noon. The FREE energy exchange will be at Privada de Pila Seca 5 (a short street off Pila Seca opposite Pila Seca 45). - The Social and Newcomers Club meets every Tuesday evening at either a local restaurant or one of the members’ private home. Newcomers who are bridge players meet on Fridays at noon in Casa Payo restaurant, Zacateros 26. The bridge players raise money for kids’ projects. - St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Calle Cardo 6, invites the community to a series of talks about “Women Mystics” during the Lenten season, beginning at noon.

Tours

February 28
- Saturday Adventure Tours usually visit a home of an artist or artisan and then go to a place of interest out of town.
The tour leaves from the Jardín at 10:30 a.m. and benefits the Centro de Crecimiento.

February 22
- House and Garden Tour begins gathering at the Biblioteca Pública at 11:00 a.m. and leaves at noon to visit 2 houses.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.

March 3 and 5
- The Tuesday and Thursday tours of the botanic garden El Charco del Ingenio continue. To join the tour, meet at the main entrance to leave promptly at 10:00 a.m. The tour lasts about two and a half hours. Bring hat and water and wear comfortable walking shoes. March 7
- Instituto Allende will have a field trip to the state capital of Guanajuato. The tour leaves at 9:00. A free preview lecture will be on March 4 at 4:00. Bilingual guides lead all Instituto tours. The Arts

February 28 and March 1
- The Instituto Allende, Ancha de San Antonio 20, will have the last of this winter’s Arts and Crafts Shows from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 each day. Over 100 artists and crafts people will be on hand, plus live music and food.

March 8
- An art activity, organized by Akiko Yasuda, will make, with the public’s cooperation, two collages, one on the west side of the Jardín and the other in Juárez Park near the kiosk. Called San Kyu (Thank you) art, it will materialize from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00.

- Antonio Cabrero Mendoza will give two concerts of piano music improvising with jazz and music of Spain and Mexico in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal, Reloj 50A, at 5:30.

- Margarita de la Mora, an internationally known pianist, will give a concert in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A, at 2:00.

- Sergio Basurto will give two concerts on the folklore harp and flamenco guitar in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal at 7:30. Entrance is at Reloj 50A.

- Iraida Noriega returns to SMA for an evening singing jazz in a show called “Ven conmigo” at El Viejo Topo Theater-Café, Stirling Dickinson 28, Local 7, Col. San Antonio., The show begins at 9:00.

- Pro Música brings Strictly Strings in two different concerts by the José White String Quartet to St. Paul’s Church, Calle Cardo 6. On the 7th the program includes Beethoven’s Quartet, Op. 74 in E flat major and works by Joaquín Turin and Manuel M. Ponce. On the 8th they will play Mendelssohn’s Quartet Op. 13 in A major plus works by Silvestre Revueltas and Manuel M. Ponce.

- March 1 – Ira Levin’s Deathtrap presented by Willowbend Productions in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A, all at 8:00 except March 1, which is at 5:00.

- Auditions for readings on March 16 thru 22 of Shakespeare’s Richard lll. Auditions on both days are from 10:a.m. to noon in the Santa Ana Theater. The reading will be of an adaptation by Murray Kamelhar.

- Playreaders of San Miguel will produce Love Song by John Kolvenbach. Readers are BJ Abrahamson, Marthe Fraser, Henry Vermillion and Britt Zaist. Paula Lopuch handles light and sound while Susan Rushton directs. Doors open at 7:00 and the play begins when the house fills or 7:30.

March 4 thru 7
- The Literary Cabaret returns to the Café Monet, Zacateros 83, to check out “Artistic License” as Reesha Browning, Marilyn Bullivant and Rick Davey bring music, poetry and FUN for the evening’s entertainment beginning at 8:00.

March 4 thru 8 and March 11 thru 15 – Players Workshop presents the Award winning play “Art” by Yasmina Reza in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A. The times vary: March 5 thru 7 and March 11 thru 14, the play begins at 8:00. On Sundays, March 8 and 15 curtain time is at 5:00.

General News

Building Green Week is at the Biblioteca Pública from February 18 to 21. It is hoped that the SMA builders will gather to offer ecological construction materials and ideas. Primarily, Arnulfo Mancera, the organizer of Building Green is trying to implement the cleaning of the skies of Pantoja, a rural community whose inhabitants specialize in brick making. Their traditional method involves burning old rubber, trash and garbage. Mancera is promoting the making of small bricks for vaulted ceilings out of hard subsoil (tepetate) plus an additive devised by Architect Eduardo Obregón. The brick makers of Pantoja are giving this method a trial. Building Green Week begins on February 18 with a conference sponsored by San Miguel Green Community Forum, The Institute for Sustainable Economics and Ecology, and the Sustainable San Miguel Organization at the Center for Global Justice Café, Calzada de la Luz 42 at 6:00.

February 15 – Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear Sandy Brooks read some poems of black poets in recognition of Black History Month. February 15 – Amigos de Animales and Balet Folklorico de San Miguel will have an afternoon of Mexican music and dance plus food from 1:00 in the Lion’s Club, across from the San Antonio church in Colonia San Antonio.
This is a fund raiser for Amigos de Animales’ spay and neuter program and new costumes for the dancers.

February 15 – Being held today – SMA’s Audubon and the botanical garden El Charco del Ingenio have joined together on a fund raising auction of one-of-a-kind bird houses (casitas de aves) created by some of SMA’s artists from noon to 3:00. Snacks and drinks will be available during the entire time. Call Linda Whyman at 152-2139 for tickets.

February 19 – Mujeres en Cambio will visit the Fernández Ranch at Atotonilco for a buffet lunch of guacamole, chicken mole, rice, beans, tortillas plus platters of salads and deserts. After lunch, there will be an opportunity to visit a gallery of Mexican folk art.

On February 28, Marianne Koerner will play and sing in a benefit concert for the program of Mujeres en Cambio in “Koerner Sings Kern.”

February 21 – The Feed the Hungry program, which assures many primary school children of at least one hot, nutritious meal a day, will benefit from an afternoon at Rincón de Santa Maria, Col. Eli Nadel handles light and sound while Don Connolly directs. Rob McCart accompanies on the guitar. Doors open at 7:00 and the play begins when the house fills or 7:30.

February 17 thru 21 – Glenda Garry Glenda Ross, an adaptation of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross begins in SMA as a dress rehearsal on the 17th, and then continues as a full play. The cast includes Kokila Byrne, Crystal Calderoni, Cleo Kamelhar, Naomi Lawler, Teresa Pipes and Kim Powell. Bill Gallacher adapted and directs.

February 20 – Javier Estrada will give a concert of Flamenco guitar and songs in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A, at 7:00.

February 21 – José Manuel Alcántara will give a classical guitar concert in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A, at 5:00

February 21 and 22 – Pro Musica will have Richard Dowling in two programs of Steinway Classics, in St. Paul’s Church, Calle Cardo 6, both at 6:00.

February 23 – Gil, Cartas and Doc Severinson will give a concert in the Angela Peralta Theater at 7:00 to benefit the International Foundation of Niños Olvidados at Jalpa in a new after school program called Leadership through Language, which includes books in English and Spanish and a computer with kid friendly programs in English.

February 24 – Ira Levin’s Deathtrap is coming to SMA when Willowbend Productions presents it in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A at 8:00.

February 13 – Gloria Espino has an opening of her paintings with 40 percent of her sales going to a 2-month-old girl who needs open heart surgery. Espino was the recipient of organized financial help a year ago to replace her bone marrow. The show is at Arias Art Gallery, Correo 73; the opening at 6:30.

General News

The SMA government has sponsored Danzón music for dancing in the Jardín on a regular basis since last July, and now it is announced that there will be Danzón and other dance rhythms twice, from 1:00 to 3:00 and from 6:00 to 8:00 in el Jardín on Sundays the following dates: February 8 and 22, March 8 and 22. The dancing will be accompanied by marimba orchestra Tono 13. All FREE.

For the younger folks, the Public Security Department is starting a new program, Blue Star (Estrella Azul) for minors, age 6 and up. The hope is that workshops in the program will teach, compromise, discipline, honesty, integrity, loyalty, responsibility, respect, and strength so that the youngsters will become positive contributors to the SMA society rather than users of drugs and alcohol.

- Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear Marge Zap and Amanda Ruiz about Mujeres en Cambio and Jovenes Adelante and how these two organizations are growing. After honoring Donna Quathamer as Citizen of the Year, they will have as guest speaker Maria Westfried, who served on the Clinton Democratic National Committee and is now using her skills on the proposed “Building Green Week.”

- The Social and Newcomers Club meets every Tuesday evening at either a local restaurant or one of the members’ private home. Newcomers who are bridge players meet on Fridays at noon in Casa Payo restaurant, Zacateros 26. The bridge players raise money for kids’ projects. Hospice San Miguel sponsors bereavement groups in both English and Spanish. Pat Tirkot (152-8164) counsels in English on Mondays at 4:00 and Leticia Gonzales (415) 113-9806 helps in Spanish. Casa de Sierra Nevada will host first Card and Games Party in the main hotel on February 22 to benefit Hospice San Miguel. Lunch will be served if participants order it. SMA’s Audubon and the botanical garden El Charco del Ingenio are joining together on a fund raising auction of one-of-a- kind bird houses (casitas de aves) created by some of SMA’s artists. - Mujeres en Cambio will visit the Fernández Ranch at Atotonilco for a buffet lunch of guacamole, chicken mole, rice, beans, tortillas plus platters of salads and deserts. After lunch, there will be an opportunity to visit a gallery of Mexican folk art.

Tours

– The Center for Global Justice will take visitors to the women’s sewing cooperative at Hacienda la Trinidad en El Moral, leaving at 9:15 a.m. The trip includes lunch of mole con pollo. To go, call their office at 150-0025.

Saturday Adventure Tours usually visit a home of an artist or artisan and then go to a place of interest out of town. The tour leaves from the Jardín at 10:30 a.m. and benefits the Centro de Crecimiento.

- House and Garden Tour begins gathering at the Biblioteca Pública at 11:00 a.m. and leaves at noon to visit 2 houses.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.

February 10 and 12
– The Tuesday and Thursday tours of the botanic garden El Charco del Ingenio continue. To join the tour, meet at the main entrance to leave promptly at 10:00 a.m. The tour lasts about two and a half hours. Bring hat and water and wear comfortable walking shoes. – Mame, an adaptation for the small stage from the Broadway original will play in the Santa Ana Theater, Reloj 50A.
