June 17 in the Ángela Peralta Theater, the 4 mayoral candidates – Lucy Núñez, Cristobal Franyuti, Alberto Mendoza and Miguel Rangel – held a two-hour debate before local party leaders, family members, and the media. They presented their proposals and began the verbal attacks on their fellow candidates.
Groups and Meetings
June 28
- This Father’s Day, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear past President Lee Veal speaking about “Omniscience vs. Free Will.” The Fellowship welcomes all races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity, when it meets each Sunday in La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.
June 30
- The Midday Rotary Club has its weekly meeting in the Hotel Real de Minas. Check-in hour is from noon to 12:15, and the meeting starts promptly at 12:30. New President of the group Gary Peterson takeover from the past year’s President David Bossman. Guest entertainer will be Sibyl Lee-English singing Autumn Leaves.
July 1
- Singles Group is now meeting each Wednesday at Bacco Restaurant in Hotel Sautto, Hernández Macías 59, from 5:30 to 7:30. Newcomers, singles, couples and just those interested in meeting new folks are invited to come.
July 2
- Lions Club now meets on the first and third Thursdays at the restaurant Don Quijote, Prolongación de Pila Seca 55. Check in time is 12:30 and the meeting begins at 1:00. They will hear Annett Goodheart, Ph.D. on laughter therapy. Call Chuck Yeager at 152-0916 for further information.

- El Grand Cook-off to benefit Feed the Hungry and Patronato Pro Niños will have teams signing-up at Longhorn Smoke House (Salida a Celaya 6) or Vista Antigua (corner of Avenida Independencia & the Libramiento a Dolores). The event is from noon to 7:00.

- San Miguel Democrats Abroad will have the 4th annual party in the gardens of the Hotel de Minas from 1:00 to 5:00. Tickets are available at Border Crossings, the Aldama location of La Conexión and Solutions.
July 5
- St. Paul’s Anglican Church well begin Sunday School for children ages 4 to 14 in the Parish Hall from 10:00 to 11:45. Rebecca Peterson with Claudia Vilchis will be in charge. Lectures in the Biblioteca Pública’s, Insurgentes 25, Sala Quetzal (SQ), Gloria Grant Room (GGR) and Santa Ana Theater (SAT)
June 29 – SQ – Lauren Lesko and Sergio Rodriguez will lecture on “As Above So Below” with examples in the lives of Zapata, Cantinflas and Kahlo. Beverly Russell will moderate from 6:00 to 8:00.
June 30 – SAT – Arturo Morales Tirado will give a talk exploring “The Magic of the Laja River” at 1:30.
June 30 – SQ – Jock Whitehouse will lecture o n “Spiritual Transformation through the Mayan Prophecy of 2012 at 5:00.
July 1 – SAT – Retired professor of Humanities Guillermo Méndez will give an illustrated lecture on the Aztec Codex Mendoza at 3:00.
July 2 – SQ – Nancy and Douglas Inkol will present a talk about “Basic Principles of Health” at 2:00.
Tours
June 27
- Saturday Adventure Tours usually visit a home of an artist or artisan and then go to a place of interest out of town. The tour leaves from the Jardín at 10:30 a.m. and benefits the Centro de Crecimiento.
June 28
- House and Garden Tour begins gathering at the Biblioteca Pública at 11:00 a.m. Three houses are scheduled to be visited.
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.
June 30 & July 2
- The Tuesday and Thursday tours of the botanic garden El Charco del Ingenio continue. To join the tour, meet at the main entrance to leave promptly at 10:00 a.m. The tour lasts about two and a half hours. Bring hat and water and wear comfortable closed walking shoes. July 4
- Instituto Allende, Ancha de San Antonio 20 will continue its summer field trips, this to Bernal and Querétaro leaving at 8:00 a.m. The trips are lead by native-speaking bilingual guides. On Wednesday, the 1st at 4:00, there will be a FREE preview lecture at the Instituto. For further information, call 152-0226.

Performing Arts

- Antonio Cabrero Mendoza will give two piano concerts in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal at 6:00. His eclectic concerts include improvisations on western and Indian classical music, jazz, music from Spain and Mexico.
June 29 and July 2
- Sergio Basurto will give two concerts on his folklore harp and Flamenco guitar in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal at 7:30.
June 30
- Turkkan Osman Macías, SMA’s current young violinist with pianist Liz Stone will give a FREE concert in St. Paul’s Church, Calle Cardo 6 at 5:00. Young Osman plays a 250-year-old Italian violin and Stone will play Pro Musica‘s 1927 Steinway piano. The FREE concert is Osman’s “Thank You” for the community support during the past two years of study in New York. He begins as a full-time student at the Manhattan School of Music in August, working for bachelor’s degree in music. So selective is the MSM that only 3 students from world-wide applications were accepted.

- The SMA Playreaders will entertain with Nagle Jackson’s sophisticated comedy This Day and Age in St. Paul’s parish hall, Calle Cardo 6. Readers are Chuck Calhoun (new), Crystal Calderoni, Jill and Michael Gottlieb, Lola Smith and John Wharton. Dic Simandl has recovered and is back handling lights and sound. Doris Pyle directs. The doors open at 7:00. The show starts at 7:30 or sooner if the house fills.
July 10 & 11
- To return after its successful opening in March will be Ken Bichel’s and Tim Hazell’s “The Kid’s Incredible Adventure (Or the Journey of the Soul),” A Classical Ethnic Rock Musical Morality Play in St. Paul’s Church, Calle Cardo 6, at 7:00. Tickets will be sold in the church office beginning June 29.

- Galería Izmal, Mesones 80, has an opening reception for its “Dog Days of Summer” group show from 6:00 to 8:00.

- Galería Casa Diana, Recreo 48, will have an opening for a group exhibition from 6:00 to 8:00.

- Art Walk at Fabrica La Aurora and Art Auction for the benefit of Casa de los Angeles from 5:00 to 8:00. Silent auction begins on July in the café courtyard.
Workshops and Classes
June 20 through 24
- The University of Texas Pan American Art and Creative Writing Workshops at the Real de Minas Hotel. Instructors are Steven P. Schneider, of the Department of English at the University, and Reynaldo Isaac Santiago, currently the director of the University’s Master of Fine Arts Program The week’s intensive workshops will be in art and creative writing especially various kinds of poems. The lecture series will be available, for those wish; there will be a small registration fee. Contact Thomas Lynch in SMA at 154-5254.
August 2 through 5
- a technical assistance workshop led by Federico Vidargas of Chicago and SMA. Vidargas will use the Urban Land Institute’s Technical Assistance Panel to affect SMA’s environment and development. The title of the workshop is SMASH – San Miguel de Allende: An Initiative for Enhancing and Sustaining of a World Heritage Site. International business, civic and educational organizations will participate.
