General News

June 14
- SMA will celebrate the Day of the Locos with a parade that forms up at 11:30 a.m., and goes along Ancha de San Antonio and Zacateros, then Canal and Hernández Macías, turning on to Insurgentes and Pepe Llanos, turnings again to Mesones, Nuñez, San Francisco to end in the Plaza Principal and the Jardín.

Two weeks ago, the announcement that SMA’s new president of CAMIRAC, National Chamber of Restaurants and Seasoned Foods was to be Sergio Espinolo. Now local SMA restaurateurs reject the appointment. There appears to be some lack of communication among the restaurant owners and the appointee.

Groups and Meetings

June 14
- Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear Kirsten West and Georgeann Johnson on the issue of “Ethical Eating.” The Fellowship welcomes all races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity, when it meets each Sunday in La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.

June 16
- The Midday Rotary Club has its weekly meeting in the Hotel Real de Minas. Check-in hour is from noon to 12:15, and the meeting starts promptly at 12:30. Linda Whynmann will speak on how the 40-year-old Audubon chapter plays a role in SMA life.

June 17
- Singles Group is now meeting each Wednesday at a different place now at Bacco Restaurant in Hotel Sautto, Hernández Macías 59, from 5:30 to 7:30. Newcomers, singles, couples and just those interested in meeting new folks are invited to come.

June 18
- Lions Club meet on the first and third Thursdays at the Hotel Quinta Loreto, Loreto 15. Check in time is 12:30 and the meeting begins at 1:00. Call Norma Robinson at 120-0726 for further information.

Lectures

Lectures in the Biblioteca Pública’s, Insurgentes 25, Sala Quetzal (SQ), Gloria Grant Room (GGR) and Santa Ana Theater (SAT)

June 16 – SAT – Arturo Morales Tirado will give a slide talk and virtual tour of Teotihuacan at 1:30.

June 16 – SQ – Richard Adelman will talk about and demonstrate movements combining Feldenkrais, Somatic psychology and Pilates to
show how one can be “Aging Gracefully: Flexibility After 50,” from 3:00 to 5:00.

Tours

June 13
- Instituto Allende will begin its summer field trips, this to Pozos and Victoria leaving at 8:00 a.m. On Wednesday, the 10th at 4:00, there will be a FREE preview lecture at the Instituto, Ancha de San Antonio 20. For further information, call 152-0226.

June 13
- Saturday Adventure Tours visits the home of Timothy Sullivan and then the next-door Jaguar Museum in Atotonilco area. The tour leaves from the Jardín at 10:30 a.m. and benefits the Centro de Crecimiento.

June 14
- There will be no House and Garden Tour today because of the Los Locos Parade.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.

June 16 & 18
- The Tuesday and Thursday tours of the botanic garden El Charco del Ingenio continue. To join the tour, meet at the main entrance to leave promptly at 10:00 a.m. The tour lasts about two and a half hours. Bring hat and water and wear comfortable walking shoes. The Arts – Readings

June 12
- Authors’ Sala Reading is scheduled at St. Paul’s, Calle Cardo 6, from 5:00 to 7:00. Kathleen Hudson, PhD, from Kerrville, Texas returns to SMA to present “Conversations across Borders—Woven Words,” as a collaborative work with Ken Bichel and Tim Hazell.

Performing Arts

June 12 & 19
- Antonio Cabrero Mendoza will give two piano concerts in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal at 6:00. His eclectic concerts include improvisations on western and Indian classical music, jazz, music from Spain and Mexico.

June 13
- The LASMA Cultural Movement will present “The Meaning of Life.” The performance is unique, in Galería Casa Diana, Recreo 48, presented by Christian Baumgartner, Laumuq, Katie Martin, Sandra Rios and Doris Van Bebber from 6:00 to 9:00. The program is ongoing.

June 15 & 18
- Sergio Basurto will give two concerts on his folklore harp and Flamenco guitar in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal at 7:30.

June 17 & 18
- The SMA Playreaders will bring Anton Chekov’s The Seagull to St. Paul’s Parish Hall, Calle Cardo at 7:00 each evening. The playreaders for this production are Norman Araiza, Crystal Calderoni, Chris Davis, Clara Dunham, Narissa Ferrar, Tom Frazee, Dennis Pipes, Seth Sharp, Henry Vermillion, John Wharton and Britt Zaist. With such a large cast on such a small stage, a stage manager is needed and Norman Araiza takes over, while Irving Kohn provides lights and sound. Fran Rowe Robbins is director.

June 20
- A nationwide singing contest, the final round – Cantantes Camino al Estrellato or Singers on the Road to Stardom will bring opera music and singers to SMA. The last round will be held in the Ángela Peralta Theater beginning at 8:00.

June 26
- A benefit concert for the SMA Red Cross will be given by the quartet of singers A Viva Voce, at 6:30. Since year 2000. this group has concertized all over the world. Tickets are available at Border Crossings, La Conexión and Solutions.

Exhibitions and Openings

June 12
- The premier exhibition of her work, The Third Dimension, by Vietnamese Hannah Jarmain will have an opening at Mero Arte Contmporáneo, Zacaterpos 24, at 7:00.

June 18
- Galería OMO in Fábrica la Aurora will feature works by Patti Bess on the subject of Pierrot . The opening is from 4:00 to 6:00
