General News

Looking forward to the Guanajuato-San Miguel Summer film festival, Expresión en Corto, this is the second year that it is a partner to the Cannes (France) Film Festival. With the partnership, there is once again a MexiCannes Residence Program in the plans.

Groups and Meetings

June 7
- Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear US Consular
Agent talk about what his role entails as he works in SMA foreign community. The Fellowship welcomes all races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity, when it meets each Sunday in La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.

June 8
- Full Moon Organics will give an Organic Fiesta and Blues Night for the benefit of the Waldorf School of SMA at Casa Angelitos, Faroles 3 in the Atascadero, from 6:00 to 10:00. For reservations, call Roger at 154-7448.

June 9
- The Midday Rotary Club has its weekly meeting in the Hotel Real de Minas. Check-in hour is from noon to 12:15, and the meeting starts promptly at 12:30. General Coordinator and co-founder of Environmental Education Project Eugenia Velasco will tell about the program and its operations.

June 10
- Singles Group is now meeting each Wednesday at Woolis Kaban Restaurant, San Francisco 25 from 5:00 to 7:00. Newcomers, singles, couples and just those interested in meeting new folks are invited to come.

June 18
- Lions Club meet on the first and third Thursdays at the Hotel Quinta Loreto, Loreto 15. Check in time is 12:30 and the meeting begins at 1:00. Call Norma Robinson at 120-0726 for further information.

Lectures

Lectures in the Biblioteca Pública’s, Insurgentes 25, Sala Quetzal (SQ), Gloria Grant Room (GGR) and Santa Ana Theater (SAT)

June 9 – SAT – Arturo Morales Tirado will lecture about the Huastecos of the eastern part of the Mexican Sierra Madre Oriental and Edward James constructions at Xilitla at 1:30.

June 9 – SAT – Wayne Colony will speak about his new picture book for Audubon The Butterflies of San Miguel de Allende and its Botanical Garden at 3:00.

Tours

June 6
- Saturday Adventure Tours visits the home of weaver Miguel Jimenez in La Puerta de Sosa. The tour leaves from the Jardín at 10:30 a.m. and benefits the Centro de Crecimiento.

June 7
- House and Garden Tour begins gathering at the Biblioteca Pública at 11:00 a.m. Two houses are scheduled to be visited.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.

June 9 and 11
- The Tuesday and Thursday tours of the botanic garden El Charco del Ingenio continue. To join the tour, meet at the main entrance to leave promptly at 10:00 a.m. The tour lasts about two and a half hours. Bring hat and water and wear comfortable walking shoes. June 13
- Instituto Allende will begin its summer field trips, this to Pozos and Victoria leaving at 8:00 a.m. On Wednesday, the 10th at 4:00, there will be a FREE preview lecture at the Instituto, Ancha de San Antonio 20. For further information, call 152-0226.

Readings

- Authors’ Sala Reading is scheduled at St. Paul’s, Calle Cardo 6, from 5:00 to 7:00. Marc Engal is a historian and currently lectures at York University in Toronto. He will present his “Clash of Extremes” and “Conversations across Borders—Woven Words,” this last is presented as a collaborative work with Ken Bichel and Tim Hazell.

Performing Arts

June 5 & 12
- Antonio Cabrero Mendoza will give two piano concerts in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal at 6:00. His eclectic concerts include improvisations on western and Indian classical music, jazz, music from Spain and Mexico.

June 8 and 11
- Sergio Basurto will give two concerts on his folklore harp and Flamenco guitar in the Biblioteca Pública’s Sala Quetzal at 7:30.

June 20
- Singing contest, final round – Cantantes Camino al Estrellato or Singers on the Road to Stardom will be held in the Angela Peralta Theater beginning at 8:00.

Exhibitions and Openings

June 5
- Bellas Artes will open a new gallery Las Bóvedas on the second floor of the antique building at Hernández Macías 75 at 6:00. The exhibit will continue until August 5.

June 6
- Happenings Galería at Mesones 57 will have a group show by nine artists under the title of “Create a Mask” with opening from 6:00 to 8:00. A class in mask making begins on June 8 at 3:00. To register, call 154-5366.

June 11
- The reinvented Magenta Gallery, Hidalgo 29, has now expanded from four artists to seven – now Rebecca Peterson and Rosa Torres from the original artists plus Luc Bédard Patricia Bogert Miller, Juan Carlos Cázares, Mario Mizrahi and Carmen Moreno. The new exhibit will be of their paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, photography and collages. The opening is from 6:00 top 8:00.
