The Weekender – July 4, 2009

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Just over 10 years ago, INFO San Miguel was created and went online for the first time.

At that time it was a simple, ‘hobby’ website with a goal of providing news and information of all kinds about San Miguel de Allende online.

In the summer of 1999, the first newsletter was sent out by email to subscribers and was called ‘New and Exciting in San Miguel‘.

Last year, in 2008, the format of INFO San Miguel changed, and the newsletter became ‘The Weekender‘.

Almost from the beginning in 1999, Reggie King, a long-time resident of San Miguel, has provided the editorial expertise. She has gathered ‘the news’ from many sources over the years.

Reggie King, retiring editor of The Weekender of INFO San MiguelToday, our ‘angel’ editor, Reggie King, has made the decision to retire due to ever-increasing health problems that interfere seriously with her abilities to bring us the news.

INFO San Miguel wants to salute Reggie in this news posting for all her efforts, enthusiasm, and wonderful friendship over the last 10 years. She is a very special person… our ‘angel’.

I’m sure you will join me in wishing her peace and happiness… and good health … in all her activities for many remaining years of life.

THANK YOU … Reggie King !

We love you…

Jim Faelker

It has been heard gratefully that it has been like “old times.” Tourism records have revealed that Mexicans came to SMA during the Easter holidays, but stayed only a few days, with not so many as previous years.

Bicycles can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With the SMA hills, mountain biking is popular with the more vigorous, as is cross country cycling in the rural areas. The cyclists can use the well trodden paths made by people and animals. For competitions, tracks are planned using not only the paths, but two lane used by autos and motorcycles and real roads as connectors. There is a cycling club that competes with others in the region. For further information contact Ricardo Trejo Acosta, President or Germán Chávez Hernández, Secretary at San Pedro 14, corner of Canal in El Centro or 154-6083, 044 415 1533276 or realsanmiguel@hotmail.com.

General News

SMA has closed its many doors for most of its public events because of the current outbreak of swine flu. These events are also closed by presidential order. Currently in SMA none of this dread disease has been reported in the SMA municipality, but as of April 28 until May 6, events in public institutions are canceled. Libraries, museums, nightclubs, sports centers and theaters have been requested to close. It has been recommended that churches close, although the bell ringers continue on their daily schedule. Celebrations for May 1 and May 3 (Santa Cruz Day) have been cancelled. Weddings and 15th birthday celebrations have to be suspended. What will be open but under special health recommendations are restaurants, bars, supermarkets, pharmacies and banks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and other international health watchers have sent experts to help with 127 lab-confirmed cases in Mexico. In all, 19 of the 32 Mexican states have confirmed cases.
National football matches will be played and televised, but with empty stadiums.
