Mexico is noted for its celebrations and the country now has two major ones coming up in two years - the September 16th, 2010, 200th anniversary of Mexican Independence from Spain and 100th anniversary of the Revolution. With two years to plan, will this be anything but a wonderful celebration!

The Federal Tourism department has made money available for tourism related businesses to upgrade their management, the quality of their offerings and at the same time increase their competitiveness and profitability. In San Miguel, eight hotels, six restaurants, two associations and one arts and crafts company participated in the offered courses, and 12 became certified.

An outcome of the visitation by the UNESCO committee is an upcoming Coloquio on SMA traffic problems in the Angela Peralta Theater. Ivar Schacke, who has been studying the SMA area particularly, says the main problems are too many cars (noise, pollution and traffic jams), parking (cars along every in town street, but two of the parking lots almost empty), walking (obstacles on the sidewalks and walkways not wide enough for two people together or passing), buses in current use are too large for SMA street system, too large cargo trucks interfering with possible smooth traffic patterns, and lack of adequate street lighting on many streets. Schacke suggests completing a ring road around SMA, making the historic centro mostly vehicle free and to develop an acceptable public transport system. The schedule of events includes urban development in Latin America historic centers (1-30 at 10:45) and traffic problems in Mexican historic centers (4:30). On 1-31, conservation in Campeche and Querétaro at 10:00 a.m. and SMA's traffic and the future beginning at 12:30.
