Feb. 20 - At 6:30 promptly the program by resident astronomer Phyllis Pitluga and her husband Linton will begin for the view of the lunar eclipse from El Charco. It will all be over by 9:50. For further information, e-mail aliciarivero123@gmail.com with subject line ECLIPSE.

Feb. 22 thru 24 
- The third annual San Miguel Writers' Conference and Literary Festival will feature Rebecca Walker on the 22nd at 6:00, Sena Jeter Naslund on the 23rd at 2:00, Laura Fraser on the 24th at 9:00 a.m. and Norm Foster on the 24th at 2:00. All of the meetings and conferences are in the Hotel Real de Minas. Literary Agent Theresa Park will be in attendance, and Literary Consultant Janet Goldstein. Panel discussions and author readings will be by Antoinette May and Patricia Hetherington. This is a high point for many of the SMA authors.

Groups and Meetings

Feb. 17 
- The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear Virginia Wheelwright, President of Jovenes Adelante, and then three of the current scholarship recipients will tell of their university experiences. The Fellowship, which welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity, meets each Sunday in La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.


Feb. 17 
- Local dog lovers launch a dog show (Canmiguelada) to be at the Hotel Real de Minas, where for only 10 pesos dog owners can enter their dogs in contests, such as best bark, best growl, best costume, best trick, the happiest dog, the most photogenic, the best tail wagger, dog and owner look-a-like and the ugliest dog. The event is from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00, with dogs on leashes. 


Feb. 19 
- The SMA Midday Rotary Club's weekly meeting in the Hotel Real de Minas will
hear Fabiola García, International Affairs Coordinator for SMA speak about how her department helps in expediting cross-border transactions both for government and non-government organizations. The meeting starts promptly at 12:30. For more information, go to www.rotarysma.org. 


Feb. 16 
- The Center de Crecimiento will have "A Dazzling Black & White Affair" at the Hotel Real de Minas with open bar and hors d'oeuvres at 6:00 plus silent auction and raffle. At 7:30 the live auction with more hors d'oeuvres will continue and at 9:00 music and dancing. Tickets are available at Romano's Restaurant, Casa Katalina, Casa Maxwell, Barbarita Boutique and in el Jardín.


Feb. 17 
- Audubon Mexico will host a Gala Benefit Brunch in the Hyder House (a blend of several old houses). PEASMA (Proyecto Educación Ambientale de San Miguel de Allende) will benefit from the event, with music by Bobby Kaplan's Trio and a Barbara Porter fashion show. Tickets are on sale in the Jardín, La Conexión, or call Bob Haas at 152-0804.


Feb. 21 
- The next gathering of healers will take place at Privada de Pila Seca 5 (street entrance opposite Pila Seca 45) at noon. Healers should contact 152-0376 for reserve a space on the program. FREE


Feb. 23 
- Amnesty International is the oldest and largest international movement of people dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights. For its first meeting in SMA in the Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15, from 1:00 to 3:00, there will be an information and discussion session. For further information, contact Bill Gilsdorf at 154-4408. 


Feb. 28 
- Mujeres en Cambio will sponsor a luncheon and Atotonilco tour. Pakina Fernández will supply the main course at the Fernández ranch. Other members of the group will bring salads, desserts, coffee or tea. The tour buses leave from in front of St. Paul's Church on Calle Cardo at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Casa de Papel. Lectures

Feb. 19 
- Photographer Robert de Gast, will present his slide/lecture based on the book of the same title "Behind the Doors of San Miguel" in the Biblioteca Pública's Santa Ana Theater at 5:00. Entrance is at Insurgentes 25.


Feb. 19 
- The PEN Winter Lecture Series will hear and see the work of Swedish photographer Lars Svanstroem in the Bellas Artes auditorium at Hernández Macías 75 at 6:00.


Feb. 20 
- The Center for Global Justice sponsors Jack Rasmus talking about his book War at Home: The Corporate Offensiive from Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush in the Biblioteca Pública's Sala Quetzal at 19:30 a.m. Entrance at Insurgentes 25.


Feb. 21 
- PEN Writers Aloud series will have Judith Jenya lecturing and reading from her recent writings in the Biblioteca Pública's Sala Quetzal at 4:00. Entrance at Insurgentes 25.


Feb. 22 
- Harriet Vines, Ph.D. will share her views on how to age well, stay fit and be happy in the Biblioteca Pública's Sala Quetzal at 5:00. Entrance at Insurgentes 25.

Tours

Feb. 16 
- Saturday Adventure Tours usually visits an in-town artisan or artist and then goes out to the country to visit one of the businesses that surround our town. The tour leaves from in front of the Parroquia at 10:30.


Feb. 17 
- The House and Garden Tour begins gathering at the Biblioteca Pública at 11:00 a.m. and leaves at noon. 


Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking part in the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.


Feb. 19 
- A guided tour by the curator of the collection Martin Smith at the Charco del Ingenio botanic garden and nature reserve will begin at 9:00 a.m. Space is limited so reserve at nzerriffi@yahoo.com.


Feb. 23 
- Instituto Allende's field trip is a visit to Atotonilco, Dolores Hidalgo and the city of Guanajuato, leaving early on Saturday. Bilingual guides lead all Instituto tours. Reservations are required and fees must be paid in advance at Instituto Allende, Ancha de San Antonio 20. Telephone 152-0226. 


Feb. 23 
- Center for Global Justice, Calzada de la Luz 42, will sponsor a trip to the Centro Desarrollo Agropecuario (CEDESA) in the northern part of Guanajuato. CEDESA is a bootstrap organization of campesinos working with government and church to bring self-sufficiency to the lives of those living in the communities. The trip will leave at 9:00 a.m. and return around 5:00. For further information, call 150-0025.


Feb. 24 
- Audubon of San Miguel will shift its monthly birdwalk to this date. Available transportation permitting, the bird watchers will go to the bridge at Montecillo de Nieto. To go on the walk, meet in front of Instituto Allende at 8:00. Bring water and hats. Bird books and binoculars enhance the experience.

Performing Arts

Continuing Feb. 15, 16. 17, 20, 21 22 and 23 
- Iguana Productions will present the comedy The Love List by Norm Foster in the Villa Jacaranda Theater, Aldama 53. Thursdays thru Saturdays at 8:00 with Wednesday and Sundays having matinees at 3:00.


Continuing Feb. 15 and 16 
- I Love Jazz will bring the Natalie Braux Quartet in the Angela Peralta Theater on the 15th; and the Cool Jazz Era in the Angela Peralta Theater on the 16th. All performances begin at 7:30. 


Feb. 17 
- The Santa Ana Theater will have José Manuel Alcántara returning for his seventh classical guitar concert at 7:00. Entrance at Reloj 50A.


Feb. 19 thru 21 
- The San Miguel Playreaders will bring Sam Shepard's "True West" to life in St. Paul's Parish Hall, Calle Cardo 6. Readers are Nick Beles, Tom Frazee, Tim Johnson and Nancy Nugent. Eli Nadel provides lights and sound under Tom King's direction. Doors open at 7:00 and the play begins at 7:30.


Feb. 19 thru 24 
- The Players Workshop will present Ron Hutchison's comedy "Moonlight and Magnolias" in the Santa Ana Theater. Tickets are currently on sale in the Biblioteca patio from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30, at the theater box office from 4:00 to 7:00. The players will be Michael Gottlieb, Rudy Hornish, Nancy Kandal and Jim Newell. Lola Smith directs. Curtain Tuesday thru Saturday at 8:00. There is to be an opening night reception afterwards. 


Feb. 22 and 23 
- The Opera Theater of Rancho Los Labradores off the Dolores Hidalgo highway will present Arleta Jeziorska in "Joan of Arc: Vision thru Fire." Writer John Morrow also directs. Music will be provided by Peter Ross on the shakuachi flute. Transportation from El Cardo Parking Garage at 6:00 for the 7:00 curtain time.


Feb. 23 
- El Viejo Topo Café-Theater on Stirling Dickinson 28 will have Jaramar and her musical group bringing traditional and popular Mexican songs and supporting her latest recording "Que Mis Labios te Nombren" at 8:00.

Feb. 15 
- Dee Roper's Gallery at Fábrica la Aurora will feature Lynn Padwe's photos of Bali: A Photo Story. Opening is from 6:00 to 9:00. The exhibit will last through February 21. 


Feb. 15 
- Exclusive San Miguel (real estate office) at Zacateros 9, will have an opening for the paintings of Christina Sol from 7:00 to 9:00


Feb. 15 & 16 
- Roland Salazar Rose will open his studio at Montitlán #6, starting at 5:00. Other times, it is best to call 152-0995 for an appointment.


Feb. 15 thru Mar. 15 
- Whitfield Gallery, San Francisco 18, will show a retrospective exhibition of Nina Martino's cityscapes. By appointment: 150-0094.


Feb. 16 thru 28 
- Generator Gallery at Fábrica la Aurora will exhibit recent works on canvas by muralist David Leonardo. The opening is from 5:00 to 8:00. Leonardo will give a Gallery Talk on February 17 at 11:00 a.m.

- Atenea Gallery, Jesús #2, will have an opening of work by Israel Zzpeda from noon until 3:00.


Feb. 22 
- The Ana Julia Aguado Gallery, Plaza Principal 18, 2nd floor will have an opening for the exhibition of "des nuits et des nuits" by Solange Galazzo, from 7:00 to 9:00.


Feb. 23 
- Terry Ann Tomlinson, papermaker and artist with the paper pulp she creates, will open her Gallery at Teraplén 29 in El Centro from 5:00 to 8:00.
