El Sindicato or El Recreo at Recreo 4 is now to be called The House of Performing Arts of El Sindicato (La Casa de las Artes Escénicas de El
Sindicato). It is offering new academic courses and workshops in ballet, jazz, folkloric Mexican dance, theater and saxophone, with instruction focused mainly on SMA's youth. Doris van Bebber is artistic head of the school. There will be academic courses as well as those in stage design, makeup and costume design. Olivia Ledón, who is administrative head of El
Sindicato, reports that there are about 80 students already registered for courses. Later, as things develop, El Sindicato hopes to become parts of the federal Public Education Department and/or of the National Institute of Fine Arts
(IMBA).

Feb. 9
- The Santa Ana Theater will host and Aztec Fashion Show to benefit the Biblioteca Pública's workshop for youngsters in pre-Hispanic music. The costumes worn by various members of Aztec society will be shown at 7:00.

Groups and Meetings
Feb. 3
- The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will hear the girl's choir from Santa Julia orphanage, along with their mentor Elsmarie
Norby. The Fellowship, which welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity, meets each Sunday in La Posada de la
Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.
Feb. 5
- The SMA Midday Rotary Club's weekly meeting in the Hotel Real de Minas will hear Donald Kwait on why Rotary and like organizations must increase the fight against disease, hunger, illiteracy and extreme poverty in the world. The meeting starts promptly at 12:30. For more information, go to

Chess players have begun meeting at Mama Mia's, corner of Umarán and Jesús on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00. They play with tournament-class sets. Assistant manager Martin is one of the best players in town.
Tuesday evenings in the Ana Julia Aguado Gallery, 2nd floor of Plaza de la Conspiración at the Plaza Principal 18, is the time and place for artists of all backgrounds and skill levels to draw from nude models in a cocktail-like atmosphere. At least one academic tradition is followed - try for capturing the action of the figure rather than likeness. Sessions on January 29 & February 12 and 26 from 5:00 to 8:00. Information at

- Audubon Mexico will host a Gala Benefit Brunch in the Hyder House (a blend of several old houses). PEASMA

Feb. 5
- Retired naturalist Bob Graham, formerly of Parks Canada, will reprise his slide show "Monarchs: Butterflies without Borders" in the Villa Jarcaranda auditorium, Aldama 53, at 4:00. This show is sponsored by SMA Audubon.

- Gregory Diamant and Larry Ellman will review Naomi Klein's book "The Shock Doctrine" and what Klein calls "Free Market Fundamentalism" in the Biblioteca Pública's Sala Quetzal at 10:30 a.m. Entrance at Insurgentes 25.

- Retired Professor of Humanities Guillermo Méndez will give a lecture "The Magnificent Maya: Part II, focusing on the Classic period from 250 to 900 AD. The illustrated lecture will be in the Santa Ana Theater at 3:00. Entrance at Insurgentes 25.

- Dianne Aigaki is a botanical artist visiting in SMA and has worked as a volunteer consultant for the Tibetan Government in Exile. Tours
Feb. 2
- Saturday Adventure Tours usually visits an in-town artisan or artist and then goes out to the country to visit one of the businesses that surround our town. The tour leaves from in front of the Parroquia at 10:30.
Feb. 3
- The House and Garden Tour begins gathering at the Biblioteca Pública at 11:00 a.m. and leaves at noon.
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a walking tour of historic SMA led by SMA volunteers leaves the Jardín in front of the
Parroquia. The tour lasts a little over two hours and is mostly level walking. Taking part in the tour helps provide medical and dental care for children in need through Patronato Pro Niños.
Feb. 9
- Instituto Allende's field trip to Guanajuato City leaves at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 6, at 4:00, there will be a free lecture preview of the upcoming field trip. Bilingual guides lead all Instituto tours. Reservations are required and fees must be paid in advance at Instituto

- Bruce and Mary Carruth (Bruce is president of the SMA Audubon) will lead a return to

- Playreaders of SMA will present "Harold and Maude" based on the 1970s movie of the same name. Readers are BJ
Abrahamson, Lois Read and Britt Zaist. Ben Westbrook directs. The Playreaders hold forth in St. Paul's Parish Hall at Calle Cardo 6. The doors open at 7:00 and the play begins at 7:30 (or earlier if the house fills).

- Actors Lab will bring "Retreat from Moscow" by playwright William Nicholson to the Santa Ana Theater stage. Performers are Geoff

- A benefit for ALMA, the SMA home for the elderly, will be a concert with singers Ken
McCutcheon-Vaun and Ron Shawn with concert pianist Liz Stone. Also appearing is the Trio Rio Negro made up of Severo Barrera, Camille Garcia and Gilberto Gonzalez. Tango dancers Daniel and Esther Ramirez are also part of the concert-show. All this will be in the Angela Peralta Theater, Mesones 82, beginning at 7:00.

- The Santa Ana Theater will present a performance of Flamenco by the Junta Flamenca at 5:00. Entrance at Insurgentes 25.

- At El Viejo Topo Café-Theater, Calle Stirling Dickinson 28, Jeanette Macari's production of ¡Viva el Tango! appears for an 8:00 performance.
Feb. 9 and 10
- Maureen Conlon began studying music here in Bellas Artes. She is now the holder of a Bachelor's degree in Music at Rice University and a Master's degree in violin performance at Penn State University. She, with Kathryn Bates, cello, and Rodrigo
Ojeda, piano, will present two concerts for Pro Música in St. Paul's Church, both performances at 5:00. On the 9th, there will be music by Beethoven, Villa-Lobos and Astor
Piazzolla. On the 10th, Mozart, Ponce, Piazzolla and Schoenfield are the composers.
Feb. 11
- Soprano Clara Dunham with accompanist Ann Reily will give a concert with music by Brahms, Fauré, Wolf and Roussel in La Posada de la
Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 at 7:00. Both musicians have been SMA residents for a number of years.
Feb. 13 thru 16
- I Love Jazz will bring a piano concert by Ken Bichel in the Bellas Artes Auditorium on the 13th; The Downbeats at the Angela Peralta Theater on the 14th; the Natalie Braux Quartet in the Angela Peralta Theater on the 15th; and the Cool Jazz Era in the Angela Peralta Theater on the 16th. All performances begin at 7:30.
Feb. 15 thru 23
- Baroque & Beyond Festival will bring the six members of the Camerata Ventapane of Houston, five from the Capella Guanajuatensis of
Guanajuato, five guest artists and two lecturers. The varied venues and performance hours will make the festival interesting and enjoyable. Many of the performances will take place in
SMA, but the main evening concerts will be in Querétaro. Varied ticket packages are available at www.promusicasma.com and

Exhibitions and Openings
Feb. 2 and 3
- From noon to 5:00 the studio/galleries of Atotonilco will open their doors to the public. Monica Galera is a fiber artist, whose studio is south on the Old Railroad road. Galería Atotonilco with folk art and antiques is a few doors away. A few miles further is Casa de Aves, a boutique hotel, which serves a country comida, and of course, there are the two hot springs La Gruta and
