Special Events

Mar. 9
- The religious statue Our Lord of the Column (Nuestro Señor de la Columna) comes to town, carried the twelve kilometers from Atotonilco through the Saturday-Sunday night, surrounded by hundreds of believers in the miracles it is said to have performed. About halfway between Atotonilco and SMA, there is a halt and the priest from the starting point hold a mass, which ends with fireworks and rockets. Joined by the priest from SMA's San Juan de Dios, the trek continues toward SMA until around 6:00 a.m. it enters Avenida Independencia, where the many swathings of the statue are removed. The street has been decorated with purple and white paper and balloons above and flowers and fragrant herbs under foot. Rockets explode again and the procession moves forward to the corner of Calzada de la Luz, Avenida Independencia and Avenida Guadalupe (around 7:00) and then to San Juan de Dios (around 8:00). In the mean time, the crowd has been growing to take part in a solemn mass outside the church. By noon, the statue is placed on a high altar, until Easter Wednesday. Then, a smaller procession returns this precious statue to its usual resting-place at Atotonilco.

Do not plan to change over to Daylight Savings Time next Sunday, if you are here in Mexico. The Saturday-Sunday leap ahead comes for Mexico on April 6 at 2:00 Central Daylight Time.

March is Red Cross (Cruz Roja) month. About 40 percent of emergency calls in 2007 were for tourists and expats. SMA City government provides 30 percent of the monthly fixed costs, and operating expenses for the Red Cross goes up as it does for all of us. More medical equipment is needed for the new ambulances. Volunteers will be collecting on the Salidas a Celaya, a Querétaro, a Dolores and on Calzada de la Estación. In addition, there are collection boxes in main banks until March 30. Large donations can be made directly to Red Cross President Jaime Fenton or call 152-4121, 152-4225 or 152-1616.
