Positive action brings positive
results...
The SMA police are following suggestions made by head of the Public Security Department Daniel Trujillo in combating gang action in various parts of the city and against the police (rock throwing at police driving through gang territory). Since February 12, organized soccer matches seem to be working in that there has been reduced rock-throwing incidents as 8 of the 12 known gangs have agreed to participate in a soccer tournament. Trujillo says repeatedly arresting gang members for antisocial behavior is not a particularly good way to educate them. There are also female gangs, and there are plans to organize either a basketball or soccer tournament involving them. Taking part in the tournament are gangs from Las Cuevitas, San Antonio, Guadalupe, San Luis Rey, San Rafael, La Estación, Mexiquito and Ejido de Tirado. With about 15 members each, the 7 player teams have 7 or 8 substitutes. Street fights and vandalism is down since the tournament started. The police officers working with the program are learning about the needs of the players, and the gang members do not seem to need to act-out so much of their resentment against the life dealt them.
