The President of Mexico Felipe Calderón has announced that the bicentenary celebration of Mexican independence will mostly take place in a new fair grounds, Expo Bicentenario 2010, located on the Guanajuato/Silao road near the GM factory. The World’s Fair type event will be from July to December 2010. To date, the plans call for a cactus garden, camping area, a carnival, hotels, a sculpture hall and a transportation hub. Special cultural pavilions – artistic, ecology, future, history, Ibero-American and music will spotlight their cultural importance. In SMA, as part of the works connected with the Bicentennial, the recently renovated Angela Peralta Theater is scheduled for further renovation. Cañada de la Virgen archaeological site is scheduled to open. Rafael Tovar y de Teresa is national coordinator, and will have the state commissions of at least nine Mexican states to deal with.

There is a new park for kids to play in, sort of. Insurgentes Park, located off the Carretera a Querétaro in the Fraccionamiento
Insurgentes, was begun in November 2007, and when the money ran out, it was left with trash, gravel and stones in place of a place to play. A second phase, with moneys to pay for it, will begin building in June. To be added are benches, cooking grills, lamps, and trashcans etc. Hopefully the trash from the first phase will be removed or used.

The big-time drug dealers have had a go at capturing
SMA. They tried to bribe our police chief, Daniel Trujillo. Other police chiefs in other cities have ended up dead. Did they refuse to cooperate, or did not
cooperate enough?
In any case, on May 7, on the Calzada de La Estación, four young men were discovered to be carrying weapons (illegal in Mexico). They are from all over Mexico – Javier Ortega Elizondo of Monterrey, Cesar Gama Leonel of
Cuatla, Morelos, Epifano Abanco Flores of Acapulco and Antonio Hernández Tapia of Mexico City. They were held in the
Presidencia, and the building was emptied of workers. The Guanajuato State Rapid Reaction Task Force joined SMA’s police, the Mexican army and police officials of neighboring towns. Snipers were in place on the roofs of the Presidencia and a federal police helicopter patrolled the area. The four prisoners were taken under guard in police vehicles to the State Attorney’s office in
Guanajuato. Workers in the Presidencia returned to their jobs in the building the next day.

News of the USA consulate here in
SMA.
Our former consul, Philip J. Maher, was remembered with a bust placed in the Plaza de Gente
Ilustres, opposite to the Real de Minas Hotel, where it joins that of Stirling Dickinson and Susan
Roettinger.
Our current USA consul Ed Clancy is on extended leave until mid-July as he takes care of his health through treatments. For regular consular services here in
SMA, the Embassy in Mexico City can send a representative about once a month. Here in
SMA, Leticia Cerritos, the consular secretary, can be of limited help. She can receive documentation for notary services and help with replacement of passports.

Jovenes Adelante is expanding the number of students in its university scholarship program, and thus its mentoring program, as well. Mentors meet with the students they are mentoring, and then report to the Jovenes Adelante board. Because some of the students are living and studying away from
SMA, only e-mail mentoring is possible. Being a mentor involves being involved with the student, being someone who wants the young person to succeed. Minimally, the mentor meets with students once a month, attends the orientation meeting in July and two other mentor meetings during the year to share experiences and ideas. Mentors should live in SMA full-time. Volunteers are needed as an English or math tutors, helping with the student interviews and screening, fundraising or technical support. Contact
