A new book, Estampas Sanmiguelenses 3, about
our city, was written by José Cornelio López and published by SMA city
hall. It is about the main churches in the center of town and some of the
historic happenings in and around those churches. The 1,000 books,
initially printed are to be distributed in schools and public libraries so
that young Sanmiguelenses can know the true historic facts about the
churches that are such an important part of SMA. The book in Spanish is
also being sold for only $40 pesos at the education and culture department
located in the Angela Peralta Theater.
For many years, the Sacred Heart (Sagrado Corazón)
drugstore was on the Jardín. Now an old fashioned (cerca 1919) has been
recreated in the Allende Museum. Many Sanmiguelenses have had a part in
making this project come to fruition, as the drugstore was put together
with the actual equipment for producing medicines and the bottles of
supplies and copies of the original furniture. It can be visited when the
Allende Museum is open.
Some time ago, an opera company was formed here - the
Concert Opera Company of San Miguel - which is now renamed the National
Concert Opera Company of Mexico. SMA will be the permanent home of the
company, with plans for all productions to begin here before touring.
Canadian Susan Weiss and SMA resident will serve as managing director and
executive producer. Weiss was responsible for the international tour of a
production of Aida and produced Pavarotti's benefit concert for Mayan
children at Chichen Itza. Former Boston Commissioner of Cultural Affairs
and now SMA resident Bruce Rossley will be President and Executive
Producer of the new opera company. Ana Isabel Cooper is vice president.
Operatic tenor Wayne Rivera will serve as artistic director. Founder and
music director of the Acapulco Philharmonic Eduardo Álvarez is the opera
company's music director. Mexican soprano will serve as director of the
resident artists program.
