Last week, the Mexican Senate unanimously passed a law to permit the
legalization of some 1.5 million foreign vehicles. The law will
allow legalization of vehicles dating from 1970 to 1993 which entered
Mexico before October 31, 2000.
Fees for registration will range from $750 pesos for six-passenger
models dating 1970 to 1979 to $4,800 pesos for 1993 vans, station wagons
or pickups.
After the law is published in the Official Gazette, owners of such cars
have 120 days to turn in the documentation and apply for registration.
Foreign vehicles which can NOT be legally registered under the new law
are:
1994 or newer model cars, vans or pickups
1969 or older vehicles
luxury or sports cars
motor homes
vehicles which entered the country after October 31.
