Telephones Area Codes Change November 17, 2001

Calls to wired (Telmex) phones in San Miguel de Allende should use the area code " 415 " instead of " 4 " after November 16, 2001.

Example:
before November 17   from the USA   011 52 4 154-6390

after November 16 from the USA 011 52 415 154-6390

Calls to cellular phones:
For local calls, the phone number is expanded to 13 digits, 044, then the area code for the area (not special cellular codes), and then the last seven digits (or 8 digits in MC, Monterrey and Guadalajara) of the present number.

Example: SMA cellular number
before November 17     044 - 4 - 112-3456

after November 16     044 - 415 - 112-3456.

For long-distance calls to cellular numbers, 01 instead of 044, then as changed above for local calls.

New Long Distance Access Codes came into effect in January, 1999, bringing Mexico in line with many other countries by requiring callers to dial:

01 for access to the national long distance system

001 for access to USA and Canada

00 for international network.

New 3-digit numbers are in use for special services like directory enquiries, operator assistance and emergency services.

All local phone numbers have 7 digits, except in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara which have 8.

All Mexico City numbers will begin with 5, and all Guadalajara numbers with 3.
