Your Car

In San Miguel it isn't necessary to have a car.  It is easy to get around town on foot, and public transportation by bus or taxi is quite reasonable and readily available.

By leaving your car at home, you don't have to worry about its security or expenses such as gasoline, insurance and parking, or the wear and tear from driving on San Miguel's cobblestone streets.

But if you bring your car...

PEMEX (Government-run gas station)
There are two stations in San Miguel.

on Salida a Querétaro (near Gigante), open 10 am - 9 pm

on Salida a Celaya, open 24 hours

A green sign indicates lead-free (Magna) gasoline
A red sign indicates a new Premium gasoline

Watch out for the "topes" (speed bumps), the raised ridges on the streets to slow down the traffic.  Most are marked either with a sign or pavement markings. But some are not!  Drive with care.  Driving a "low-to-the-ground" sports car in San Miguel is not recommended!

If you should drive in Mexico City, remember your license plate.   There is one weekday each week when you cannot drive.  If you do not comply, the fine is stiff!  The day is determined by the last digit of your plate:

Mon:    5-6        Tues:    7-8         Wed:    3-4         Thur:     1-2         Fri:    9-0

Taxis

Taxis are readily available in San Miguel.   Local taxis do not have meters.  The  fare in the central area is US$2.  The fare to outlying areas is more and should be negotiated before starting.  It is not customary to tip cab drivers. Most drivers speak English.

Taxis stands are located on the south side of the Civic Plaza, and at the Central de Autobus (bus station).  If you need to call a taxi, the cost is usually more.

Several numbers to call for this 24 hour service are:
    152-0192        152-0550         152-1795

In San Miguel the official taxi color is apple-green and white.

Servicio Mixto de Taxi is the name used for a taxi that transports people or freight.  They are usually small yellow trucks  To request one, call 152-2635  or go to the taxi stand at Mesones and Juárez.
